Fun memories of Christian about to

 blow out his birthday candles

Happy February Tappers! It’s that love filled month when we recall the great tap legend Gregory Hines who started my passion for teaching tap dance. He was such a patient and generous teacher and performer, so loved in the dance community and beyond. We have an exciting month ahead starting with where Gregory was the happiest, on stage. On Tap Notes – January 2015

Happy New Year!

I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful sunshine and fresh crisp air ushering in 2015! I arrived back to Oregon from Hawaii on Saturday with the sunshine following me. We’ll all just have to get together and DANCE to create the warmth.  It’s wonderful to be back and ready to dance. I hope you all enjoyed your holiday break.

I had a great trip to Hawaii visiting our Maui family. Once again our  daughter Ariana  and I  practiced  pilates and yoga on a paddle board while a huge turtle popped it’s head up to see what the heck we were doing!  Then tap dancing on the paddle board shuffled me right into the ocean!  I’ll stick with the” boards on Broadway” and  the tap house for all shuffling!

A very Happy 12th Birthday to Talia Ruehr (Today! New Years Day) and Happy January birthday to Marie Cunningham and Christian Decker !We’ll be doing the birthday dance as the new term begins!

The Winter/Spring 2015 term begins Monday, January 12 at 7:45pm

At the Broadway Studio

Dates are January 12 to March 16  ($150.00)

Spring session will be April 6 to May 25 ($120.00)

I found this clip of tapping cards near Times Square that I have sent out before. Let it be an On Tap New Years  tradition!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh0CMcLiRkw&feature=share

Also, a great dance show is coming to Western Oregon University. I watched their rehearsal.  Here are the details:

January 9, 2015  Rainbow Dance Theater

Rainbow Dance Theatre’s ensemble of virtuoso dancers brings their new show to Rice Auditorium. iLumiDance is comprised of works that feature the interplay of dance and illumination. The dancers are sure to amaze audiences of all ages with their athletic “pull-out-the-stops celebration of … dancing that pays homage to world-dance and –music influences” (Sheryl Dare, Honolulu Advertiser). The distinctive choreography of artistic directors Darryl Thomas and Valerie Bergman creates “an exotic feast for the senses”. (Isamu Jordan, Spokane Spokesman Review) rainbowdancetheatre.com/

May 2015 find you tapping into great joy and good health!

February 2014 On Tap Notes

Snowy Tap HouseHere’s a look at the Tap House a few hours ago..It’s getting it’s fullest coat of white ever!

Happy very snowy February everyone! February is always a super special month as two of my greatest mentors were born on February 14, 1946. My mom Loretta (who celebrates her 80th this year!) and Mr. Gregory Hines, in whose memory “On Tap” was created. Here is a brief bio on Gregory.

“He was an actor, singer and a writer, but first and foremost, Gregory Hines was a dancer. Hines both popularized the art form of tap dance and stayed faithful to its unique history. A dancer for 54 of his 57 years, Hines had a unique ability to combine the aural and the visual, and is considered one of tap dancing’s greatest stars to date. He began tap dancing before he turned 3. A mere two years later, he turned professional, dancing with his brother Maurice as part of the Hines Kids, and later, the Hines Brothers. In “White Nights” (1985), he joined ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov (my #2 mentor) to tell a tale of two rebel dancers struggling to escape the hold of the Soviet government in Moscow. The movie helped popularize both dance mediums. The 1989 movie “Tap” featured Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. as well as other famed dancers. Hines’ love of dancing reigned supreme and one of his other major achievements was a successful campaign to Congress to officially designate May 25, 1989, as National Tap Dancing Day. Congress declared tap dancing a “uniquely” American art form and selected the birthday of tap dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson (whom Hines later portrayed in a 2001 TV special) to commemorate tap. The resolution also notes Robinson’s contributions to breaking racial barriers. Hines continued to work almost up until his death from cancer on Aug. 9, 2003. He is remembered as one of the greatest dancers of all time, and his legacy lives on at the New York Public Library’s Gregory Hines Collection Of American Tap Dance. The collection includes film, video, photographs and manuscripts chronicling the history of American tap dance.”

I will be forever grateful for the chance meeting with Gregory Hines I had in 2001 at OMSI in Portland. His taking the time to talk with me and encourage me to teach tap will always resonate within me. In his memory I choreographed “Bojangles”, which we enjoy in class often! Great movies to check out again and again,Bojangles and Tap!!
